We are poshing it up at the
Crowne Plaza in Lake Placid. This has provided a much needed break from the endless driving wind and rain but is a bit heavy on the pocket book. The idea is to luxuriate for a day or two before pushing on into Qubec. The scenery is beautiful here but, given that this is a major destination for New yorkers, they could learn a thing or two from Ambleside.
Lake Placid was the venue for the 1980 Winter Olympic Games, during a particularly chilly part of the cold war, in which the USA came from behind to win the ice hockey final against the USSR. The locals are still harping on about it too!!
As you can see, the portion sizes at the brew pub are not for the faint hearted.
Time for a paddle on the lake!

Where is your pioneer spirit? Shouldn't you be roasting moose over an open fire? Or at least eating beans and drinking coffee round the campfire. Davey Crocket would be turning in his grave!
(Still jealous and growing bitter!)
Dave B...don't be too jealous......we got rained out yesterday! Have started adoptiong Enid Blyton Berg-like phrases in response to being constantly cold and wet. For example....it took me 2 hours to get the fire going (in the rain) last night. We were all luxuriating in lashings of hot choccie. Never tasted so good.
Yours wimpishly
PS: to make matters worse there was an IronMan triathlon session going on in Lake Placid. Lots of unfeasibly fit and muscular dudes in contrast to my bedraggled-ness.
Just think of yourselves as being at the top of Duddondale in a muddy field with one cold tap in the corner! Remember? it will seem quite cosy in comparison!
Africa Oye in gale force winds and driving rain yesterday! What's going on?!
How could I forget? In fact all this rain makes me feel homesick!
